Spring To-Do List for Your Roofing
It’s spring again, which for many households is a time of renewal and “spring cleaning”. Gone are the dreary days of winter, and it’s time to welcome in better weather, higher temperatures, and fun summer days to come. It’s also a transition time for your roof, as your home goes from holding all that winter snow to melting and getting ready for the summer sun. Now is the time to perform some basic repairs on your Billings roofing to get it ready for the coming season.
Check the Surface
Walk around your home and take a look at the surface of your Billings roofing to determine if there are areas where damage has occurred. You may not always be able to spot all the damage from the ground, though, so if you are concerned about an aging roof or you have difficulty getting up there to check it out on your own, call a Billings roofing contractor to come and help you inspect. Always check for:
- Loose or missing shingles
- Bubbling, cracking, or curled shingles
- Loss of the small granules that protect your shingles (you will often see this on your sidewalks or in the gutters)
Clean the Gutters
The spring and fall are ideal times to get outside and clean up the gutters. They play a very important role in helping the melting snow and rain get from the top of your roof out into the yard without causing damage to your landscaping or pooling in areas where the water could be problematic, such as around your home’s foundation or basement.
Inspect Protrusions
Anything that is protruding out of the top of your roof—chimneys, skylights, vents, and more—leave the potential for a future leak. While they were likely sealed with metal flashing to prevent problems, now is the best time to look at the flashing and check for signs of rust or damage. If you see these problems, be sure to get it fixed right away.
If you spot signs of damage or you have issues that you don’t think you can repair on your own, call a Billings roofer to come and help you get it fixed today.
